Tartan Design for the College of Arts and Science

After extensive research discovering the history of the College of Arts and Science at the University of Missouri, I designed a tartan option for the college. My design was selected for one of the top 4 designs.

I wanted the pattern to be based on history, and to be original yet timeless. The unofficial, official color of the College of A&S is blue, yet has only been used on a graduation tassel and isn't seen anywhere else to show identity. I incorporated the color to be the foundation of my design.

The concept statement for the pattern is:

"The College of Arts and Science is a diverse, inclusive college, and helps students discover their future potential. The blue in the pattern represents the official A&S color and is the foundation of this design; it’s associated with freedom, intuition, imagination and balance. The next prominent color is yellow (or gold) which represents not only MU but is also the official color of inclusion- a value that is held closely to the heart of A&S. The black represents strength and authority, in both MU and the subject matter. Gray is centered on the strength of the black and encompassed in yellow, and is the symbol for humanity which serves as a reminder that life operates in shades of gray. The color that represents the Student Council, maroon, stands for passion and courage, and motivates us to take action. Finally, the tartan is laced with white which represents peace, hope, fairness and goodness, and green which symbolizes growth, life and vitality."
